Through the Killing Glass

This is the second installment of the Alice in Deadland trilogy by Mainik Dhar.

The sequel to the Amazon.com Bestseller, Alice in Deadland More than two years have passed since Alice followed a Biter with bunny ears down a hole, triggering events that forever changed her life and that of everyone in the Deadland. The Red Guards have been fought to a standstill; Alice had restored some measure of peace between humans and Biters; and under Alice, humans have laid the foundations of the first large, organized community since The Rising- a city called Wonderland. That peace is shattered in a series of vicious Biter attacks and Alice finds herself shunned by the very people she helped save. Now she must re-enter the Deadland to unravel this new conspiracy that threatens Wonderland. Doing that will mean coming face to face with her most deadly adversary ever- the Red Queen. Source

This book was just like the first.  It took me a while to read it, but that is merely because of my insane schedule.  This was an easy read.  It was a little difficult to follow, but that was because I always ended up stopping the worst places possible.  There are some underlying current political issues as well.  Although, they are well stated and hit upon in this book.

I give this book a 3 out of 5 stars.  It is a good read, just not a memorable for me.  I can’t really recall any specific details.  I can’t say I would recommend it because I can’t really remember it. so yeah…

TWD Season Five Finale

Okay, So I don’t have a book review for you today because I am not quite finished with the book that I am currently reading.  I am about half way through, so hopefully I will have it done  by next Monday.  But I am going to share with you my thoughts on the season finale of The Walking Dead from last night.  And I thought that since it is based on a comic, it was appropriate for today’s topic.

STOP: if you have not seen the season finale and want to watch it please be aware that there are spoilers ahead.

So If you didn’t know, I am a huge walking dead fan.  Like huge.  The world and time stop when it is on.  My father and I watch it together with our dog, yes she is a fan too.  (we catch her watching it with it)  And last night’s episode was intense.  Really intense.  Everything came to a head.  I was quite concerned for our little family and at one point I thought we were going to lose all of them.  I thought Daryl was going to die to save Aaron, I thought Glenn was going to get eaten, I thought Sasha was going to murder Father Gabriel (still not a fan of this character), and of course I thought that Rick was going to be kicked out of Alexandria.  I mean it all really came to a head.  Father Gabriel, even though I don’t like him I think that he saved Rick’s life by leaving the gate open.  Without that he would probably not have met Morgan again.  The Wolves terrify me and can I just say that the guy that held Morgan at gun point in the beginning was an amazing actor!  I mean seriously, the intensity and emotion was just amazing!  The trap that the Wolves set up…ingenious.  I mean who would have thought that a rave party would reset the trap.  There is beauty in madness.  I wonder what conflicts will be like with them?

So as I said my father and I watch this together.  We get lost in each episode so much that we forget time all together.  That was what happened last night.  We were watching, literally on the edge of our seats and then it just ended with Morgan watching Rick kill Pete….OMG!  My father and I both said “sonofabitch that was intense” as we hit the closest object.  Excuse the language.  I mean seriously.  My best friend also watches it and her reaction was…mind blown. Which is a good description.  It was an amazing ending to the season.  I think it was seriously the best season thus far with all of the conflicts not just with the people of Alexandria but also themselves.  The writers and producers have really stepped it up a notch.

I am looking forward to next season, I am not sure if it will be the last or not, I am hoping for the latter.  But at least this time they are giving us a spinoff to watch!  So that is a plus.  It of course won’t be anything like the original, but I’m sure that it will be good all the same.  The spinoff is called Fear The Walking Dead.

Super excited about the upcoming season 6.  I can’t wait to see what they throw at up next!  What were your thoughts on last night’s finale?  Did you like it or not?

Alice in Deadland

Alice in Deadland written by Mainak Dhar took me by total surprise.  Yes this is another Alice in wonderland style of book.  But they are so good! As you can tell this year has been all about going down the rabbit hole, in many different ways and styles.  So without further ado, here is my review.

Alice is a 15-year-old girl that grows up in the Zombie Apocalypse in India near Delhi.  She sees a biter and follows him down a hole in the ground, only to discover a who new world, oh and the zombie is wearing bunny ears.  After being captured by the biter, she is taken to the Queen of the Biters, Dr. Protima who after being bitten herself takes one of the only vaccines and becomes a half-breed.  Alice doesn’t believe what she is seeing or hearing, as the Queen tells her that she will be the one to bring peace to both sides.  We find out that the biters can actually co-exist with humans.  that they are more like animals than mindless cannibals.

“Civilization as we know it ended more than fifteen years ago, leaving as its legacy barren wastelands called the Deadland and a new terror for the humans who survived hordes of undead Biters.

Fifteen year-old Alice has spent her entire life in the Deadland, her education consisting of how best to use guns and knives in the ongoing war for survival against the Biters. One day, Alice spots a Biter disappearing into a hole in the ground and follows it, in search of fabled underground Biter bases.

What Alice discovers there propels her into an action-packed adventure that changes her life and that of all humans in the Deadland forever. An adventure where she learns the terrible conspiracy behind the ruin of humanity, the truth behind the origin of the Biters, and the prophecy the mysterious Biter Queen believes Alice is destined to fulfill.

A prophecy based on the charred remains of the last book in the Deadland- a book called Alice in Wonderland.” (Good Reads)

This one was a little hard for me to get into in the beginning, but once I got into it, it was hard to put down.  This is the first book in the trilogy, although Mainak Dhar’s website shows many many more than just three.  Any who.  I really like this.  It was similar to the others that I had read, but different in so many ways.  The other books are all about destruction of the zombies and this is about co-existing with them.  There are a lot of political ties to the issues we are currently having (China wanting to take over the world, terrorist groups, cults, etc.), which I think for a book that is geared towards young adults and teens is a good thing because I think everyone needs to be aware of what is happening around the world.

Some of my favorite quotes from this novel include:

“She looked back at the child again, and this time his eyes met hers.  There was no innocence, no love, just the blank, hate-filled expression that was characteristic of biters….”

“When people are scared enough, they begin to accept any form on tyranny because unquestioning obedience to unknown masters is better than facing known dangers.”

I really liked this book, not just because it was Alice in Wonderland styled, but because it was different, way different from all of the other books that I have read.  I would like to give this book four stars of five.  And I starting the next one as soon as this goes live.

four stars

Be sure to check out Mainak Dhar’s website here, for other titles and updates!  If you have read this book, let me know what your thoughts were on it.  Did you like it or not?  Why, and what were your favorite parts.  I think after I finish this trilogy I am reading The Cubicle Manifesto….It just sounds so good!

This is my Brain on Sleep

My week of being sick has finally caught up with me.. I am so exhausted this morning!  I am honestly having issues keeping my eyes open, and I have had my coffee already.  I just don’t understand.  Why is it that if I get the normal amount of sleep I am really really tired all day long, but if I get too little of sleep then I am wide awake for most of the day?

There really isn’t much of a change with me here as of late.  I am still getting over being sick, which sucks.  I typically take longer than most people anyway, but this is ridiculous.  Seriously, let’s be done with this already.  But on the bright side I have finally managed to keep my meals down.  Because of all of the coughing, my gag reflex is in overdrive, so here lately I have been throwing up almost every meal I consume.  Yesterday I finally managed to keep lunch down.  I think part of that is because I have also starting munching on Saltine crackers to help with the stomach issues.

I am still stuck on my 90s music, I just cannot seem to get away from it here lately.  But that okay, because at least its good music.

I am just about finished with my latest read, and you will be seeing that review up on Monday.  Tomorrow there will be a post, but it will not be fitness related.  I have a review set up for tomorrow!  You will want to read it i guarantee it!

The boards of directors from the two YMCA’s that I work at met Monday about the possible merge of the two associations, and they decided after at least an hour and a half meeting that they needed more time to decide.  Which is a plus for me because I can still work 40 hours at both locations and not get penalized for it.  But it also means that I still don’t have any answers about what I am doing for the summer, or if I need to find work elsewhere after the summer.  I am not really a fan of not knowing what I can do, I don’t really like waiting on things like this, because I am a planner….a big planner, like weeks and months ahead.  I am not a procrastinator either, so I really don’t like not knowing what to do.  O well, I guess for now I will just have to enjoy the ride, I mean I can’t really complain too much considering that I am blessed to have two jobs that I love doing.   Most people only have one that they might like on a good day.

I had to replace one of my windshield wipers over the weekend.  We are headed into the wet season here in STL and one of my wipers started to come apart on both ends, so it was time to replace it.  Let me tell you it was witch to get the old one off.  I had to Google it.  Terrible, it know.  But now the new one is so much better than the other wiper…so I may replace that one as well….We shall see.

Okay, so I do actually have a question for all of you beauty lovers.  I am considering getting a new subscription box to possible replace my ipsy bag. Now I am not replacing it because it was a crappy month or because I am just not happy with it overall.  I love my ipsy bag and I think it is a great value, I just want to branch out and try other boxes.  I want something in the same price range that is worth it.  I have mixed thoughts on birch box, I have seen several videos and reviews to know that they are really a hit and miss company.  So I am asking you for your advise and thoughts.  What subscription box should I try next?

Sick of being sick

As I posted to other day, I am back from the bed, and tired of being sick.  Oh am I tired of being sick!

Yes, I still had to work during being sick after I was no longer contagious with Strep.  I can’t complain too much because I got to catch up on some much needed rest and just got re relax a bit.  I geeked out on Dr. Who, what else? And I ate a lot of Chicken soup.

I have always hated being sick.  I can remember when I was younger wishing to get sick so I could miss out on school….at least that was before I got strep….which has been my enemy from about third grade on.  Now a days whenever I do get sick, I am knocked down for the count.  If its a cold I can usually just work through it, but anything respiratory related and I am done for!

Getting sick this time isn’t really a surprise considering almost everyone around me is sick in one way or the other.  So when I wasn’t working or trying to get into the doctor I was in bed in recovery.

After finally getting into the doctor I was actually astonished with my diagnosis.  So the doctor put me on a rescue inhaler because I was extremely winded from just walking the 20 feet from waiting room to exam room, and my albuterol dosage was upped for the time being.  Yay for me!  More meds that I don’t really want to take, in fact I have yet to use the rescue inhaler because I haven’t needed it and I usually only use the albuterol at night to keep my lungs open.

So I finished all the last two seasons of doctor who, the last season with Matt Smith, who by the way is my favorite doctor and the first season with Peter Capaldi…In case you were wondering My top three Doctors are as follows:  Matt Smith, David Tennant, and Peter Capaldi.  I am too young to really remember the others as this show has been on television since 1967 and I didn’t get into it until the last couple of years.

Being sick lead to several good things though.  No, I did not get to finish my book, I was too out of it to even consider reading it, so when I get that finished It will be here.  I got to clean up the house and disinfect everything, that’s a total plus considering I live with two grown men.  I got to raid my music library for lost favorites and memories.  I got the time to sit back and relax, well for a little while anyway.  I got to play with the organization of some of the items that I haven’t quite figured out yet.  And I got to catch up on sleep.

Do you ever get the “I don’t want to go back to work or do anything other than sit here and relax” mentality after being in bed sick for a couple of days?  I am so guilty of that.  I kind of get into this rut or state of mind that I don’t need or want to get up or do anything, and I think it has a lot to do with my personality or just who I am.  I am one of those people that once I actually get myself up and motivated, I will go go go all day long until I drop.  But if I just sit in bed and don’t even attempt to get up or do anything, I will literally stay there all day.  Is anyone else like that?  I mean I am not saying that I am a lazy person, I am the total opposite, but sometimes I think my body wants me to slow down some times and I just can’t.  Like there is a permanent on switch and I can’t find it to shut it off.

I don’t know. I think I am just rambling at this point, I haven’t talked to you all in a week and it got to me!

What do you do when you are home sick?  What are your rituals and remedy’s for a quick recovery?

Ensnared

The final installment of the Splintered series by A. G. Howard was beautifully morbid and ensnaring.  From page one to the last page, it was a painting, pun intended.

After surviving a disastrous battle at prom, Alyssa has embraced her madness and gained perspective. She’s determined to rescue her two worlds and the people and netherlings she loves. Even if it means challenging Queen Red to a final battle of wills and wiles . . . and even if the only way to Wonderland, now that the rabbit hole is closed, is through the looking-glass world–a parallel dimension filled with mutated and violent netherling outcasts. In the final installment of the wildly popular Splintered trilogy, Alyssa and her dad journey into the heart of magic and mayhem in search of her mom and to set right all that’s gone wrong. Together with Jeb and Morpheus, they must salvage Wonderland from the decay and destruction that has ensnared it. But if they succeed and come out alive, can everyone truly have their happily ever after?

Wow.  It’s all I have to say.  That and can I please take back my review of the first book?  Oh good lord.  This is a phenomenal series to dive into.  at previously stated in my other reviews it the perfect balance of Burton and Carroll.  I devoured this book like there was no tomorrow.  It is so well done, and totally unpredictable.  The more I read it the more I loved it.

Some of my favorite quotes from this novel:

“Jeb is an anchor; he holds me grounded to my humanity and compassion.  By Morpheus is the wind; he drags me kicking and screaming to the highest precipice, shoves me off, then watched my fly with netherling wings. When Jeb’s at my side, the world is my canvas unblemished and welcoming; when I’m with Morpheus, it’s a wanton playground- wicked and addictive.  Each guy occupies a different side of my duel heart.  Together, they bridge my netherling and human worlds.”

“Jebediah has given up on you, but I never will.  I can offer you the security you desire.  If you’ll be mine, your heart will forever be sheltered in my care.  Yes, we will quarrel incessantly, and fight for dominance.  And yes, there will be ravishes of passion, but there will also be gentle lulls.  That is who we are together.  You’ll never need fear that your love is not reciprocated.  For although you’ve made me feel things I am not equipped for…i cannot stop feeling them.”

“May the fairy goddess light your footsteps with stars, and may your travels be fair, however far you roam.”

“That’s because believing you’re alone in the universe is less terrifying than admitting you might have an otherworldly audience.”

I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars, as all of the books in this trilogy deserve 5 stars.

I recommend this book to anyone that is an Alice in Wonderland fan.  If you have read this book, please let me know your thoughts on it in the comments!  I would love to hear what you think about it!

Unhinged By A. G. Howard

This is the second installment of the Splintered Series by A. G. Howard.  After reading this book, I almost want to retract my review of the first one.  Let me just say that obviously I hadn’t read any of the novels following splintered, had I, it would have gotten a different review.  Any who,

Wonderland is again in peril, and Alyssa has to save it.  This book starts a year after Ali and Jeb go down the rabbit hole together and a year since Ali has been crowned the Red Queen, as we learn in the first one that Ali is a descendant of hers.

“Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she’s always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she’ll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.”

Taken from good reads.com

Some of my favorite quotes and moments from the book:

“‘Of all the times you’ve undressed me in my fantasies, I never remember feeling this… unfulfilled.’  ‘Please, Morpheus,’ I beg upon hearing Jeb stir in the background.  ‘Ah, but those delectable words,’ Morpheus says with a provocative smirk, ‘those are always in the fantasy.’  I glare at him. ‘You’re unbelievable.’ ‘And that sentiment is reserved for the end.'”

“All I have to do is set the power free. Escape the chains of humanity, let madness be my guide. If I forget everything but Wonderland, I can become beautiful pandemonium.

“Nothing can break the chains you have on my heart. For you are Wonderland.”

I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.  This one is so much better than the first.  This one sucked me in and made me ride the roller coaster of it.  It was so well done.

I recommend this book to anyone that likes Alice and Wonderland!
